The 3-Tiered Instructional Model
Our teachers use the NJDOE recommended 3-Tiered Instructional Model to structure their 90-120 minute literacy block. This is based upon a comprehensive matrix of scientifically research-based strategies on effective classrooms.
In Tier 1 read-aloud/write-aloud, the teacher models the standard with a grade level text (fiction or non-fiction) to show students how to apply the standard. The teacher also introduces academic vocabulary, chosen for it's greatest instructional potential (based upon Isabel Beck's research).
In Tier 2, students apply the standard in small group guided instruction on the their instructional reading levels (one leve above their independent reading level) using novels, articles, magazines, and other texts. Students are also working on writing, vocabulary, and research during this Tier 2 time as both teachers assist the guided groups. While Tier 2 is going on, Tier 3 also takes place as more intensive intervention for students seriously behind. Tier 3 consists of students working on specific skills targeted to close the learning gaps evident through student data. In addition, all students must also have an independent reading novel on hand at all times along with reading responses in writing so teachers can track student progress.

The Daily Five for Small group instruction
Under the umbrella of the 3-tiered model, our teachers use aspects of The Daily 5 method to design effective small group instruction. The main idea of The Daily 5 is to develop rigorous routines and centers in which students can work independently. This not only motivates students to own and direct their learning, it enables teachers to do one-on-one conferencing and small group guided instruction in reading and writing, thus giving each student more personalized attention to his/her specific needs.
