What is vertical progression?
The Common Core Standards provide a rigorous set of objectives for language arts literacy and math that students must meet through K-12 in order to be prepared for college. LLACS recognizes that all students learn at different rates; therefore, teachers need to meet students at their current academic level, whether it's below grade level or above. The vertical progression document outlines each standard as it develops in complexity through the grade levels. Teachers are expected to use the vertical progression guide to fill in gaps in learning from previous grades, and to challenge advanced students who are ready for above-grade-level assignments. In essence, teachers must use the vertical progression guide to go up and down the complexity levels based upon a student's ability. For students struggling in their current grade level, the teacher's goal is to build complexity step by step to bring that student's performance up to grade level.
